Bringing Richmond Families and Neighbors Together Since 2004

“Family Camp is the most incredible experience. It is the best gathering with family, friends and community. People treated other people with respect regardless their origin or color. We were surrounded by redwood trees, and nature was all around us. I felt safe and incredibly happy.” – Family Camp participant

Four times each year, YES provides access to nature for families whose children are enrolled in YES's year-round programming so that they can enjoy a weekend of camp activities and enriched community-building under the redwoods. YES Family Camps increase people’s appreciation of and access to nature, help build cross-cultural relationships between diverse neighbors, and highlight relevant community issues and wellness practices in a safe, supportive atmosphere.

More than 20 volunteers and staff serve as liaisons, guides, cooks and playmates throughout the weekend. English/Spanish translation takes place during all activities, and is crucial to support dialogue between individuals who are often separated by a linguistic divide.

Programming is based on weekend themes such as water conservation, the benefits of physical activity, nutrition, mindfulness, and other wellness and conservation practices. The weekend includes a family art project, adult workshop, education presentation, and an Early Learning Campers Program for 3-6 year-olds. Families enjoy other activities such as a climbing wall, archery, zipline, drumming, hiking and an interactive campfire.

The supported camp experience affords parents and caregivers the opportunity to take a break from their regular routines and stresses. Although the weekend is tightly scheduled with events and activities, many parents experience Family Camp as a vacation and restorative retreat.

Wellness education, communication games, and adult workshop topics serve as the catalyst for adult participants to continue practicing what they learned at camp back home in their community supported by YES's Adult Leadership Program. For this reason, Family Camp serves as the entry point for YES’s adult leadership pathway.
